Adult Orthodontics: Is it any different to orthodontic treatment in the child patient?

There has been an exponential rise in the number of adults seeking orthodontic treatment recently.  Reasons for such an increase in demand can be attributed to patients keeping their teeth for longer, an increase in the range of aesthetic appliances available to patients as well as the social acceptability of orthodontic treatment in adults.  

Covid-19 has also made patients more aware of the appearance of their teeth and the wearing of masks for the foreseeable future has opened the orthodontic door for patients that did not want to be seen with orthodontic appliances.  Do we manage the adult orthodontic patient any different to the child orthodontic patient?  Is treating adult orthodontic patients easier or more difficult than the child orthodontic patient?

This presentation will outline why adults are increasingly seeking orthodontic treatment and what special considerations are necessary when assessing, planning and treating the adult orthodontic patient.
